Dental Crowns Marietta
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a tooth shaped cap that is placed over a prepped tooth. It is used to protect, restore, and improve the appearance of any damaged teeth. When teeth reach a level of decay, they require certain steps to help protect and prolong the life in which they have. At times, they may be too weak to function with just a filling. More often than not, a dental crown may be required to help your teeth survive. Depending on the damage, your Marietta dentist, Dr. John Bishara, will recommend one or the other.
Why are Dental Crowns needed?
Dental crowns can be used:
– To restore and protect any damaged or root canal treated teeth from breaking
– To enhance the appearance of discolored or misshaped teeth
– To help with any cosmetic alterations to your teeth
Here at J & J Dental, we always start with an initial consultation with Dr. Bishara in order to evaluate any damaged teeth. If your teeth are severely damaged, Dr. Bishara may recommend performing a root canalbefore placing a dental crown. The first visit will consist of reshaping any teeth, which might include gently filing them down or building them up, depending on the circumstances. Dr. Bishara will take an impression in order to make a permanent crown. You will be fitted for a temporary crown until the permanent crown is ready.
Caring for your temporary crown:
– Avoid sticky foods, such as gum and caramel
– Minimize the use of the side where your temporary crown is in place
– Instead of flossing and pulling up, floss in a side-ways motion to avoid pulling off your temporary dental crown
The second visit is usually about two weeks later. This visit consists of trying on the permanent dental crownto make sure the coloring is a match and is comfortable for you to wear. After final approval, Dr. Bishara will permanently cement your crown in place.
In the past, dental crowns were made with both metal and porcelain to give the tooth a stronger foundation . Over time the crown begins to look duller than your natural teeth and causes darkening around the gum line. This is not a good option, especially for front teeth. Here at J & J Dental, we use all porcelain dental crowns including Zirconium. Zirconium crowns are so strong that they can be used anywhere in the mouth. Zirconium can withstand the biting pressure in the front and back as well as any teeth grinding. If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), Zirconium crowns are an excellent choice. This material has become a popular choice because of its strength and aesthetics. They reflect light the same way as your teeth which give it a natural look.
